GT Popping Locations & Trips

elirae
Hi Guys,
I'm currently living in Bangkok, having just moved from Australia.

I'm looking to do some top water fishing and land some big GT's " Giant Trevally ", so I can check that off the bucket list.

Just wondering where would be a good option that's affordable, and not too far away? The Andarmans, Maldives, and Bali look great but are too far away and expensive, I'm looking for something that's more like 3-4 days.

Are there any good options in Malaysia, Indonesia (Java / Sumatra), Thailand, Myanmar where there is consistent big GT popping?

Would love to meet some guys looking to do any trips for stick baiting and popping, or if anyone has a contact for a guide or boat that does this, it would be very appreciated.

Thanks

    No where nearby can u get big GTs beside Maldives Onan, Andaman and some far away places. You should know when you pay peanut you get monkey.

    Okay sure, well I've definitely seen occasional photos and read reports of big GT's landed elsewhere. It's not always the case that there are professional charter operators in every region, sometimes you need to take a rockier road to get there but you can find other spots that produce, hence why I'm researching. Money doesn't always equal more fish.

    Indonesia has a lot of places for GT fishing. Try checking Komodo island, lampung Indonesia and more.

    Hello there,

    What's important to know is your budget, you can speak to @Seagal or go to her https//www.facebook.com/LiLineo?fref=ts and ask her about the Maldives. Tell her Luke from FishingKaki sent you.

    You can also find her here http//classifieds.fishingkaki.com/charters/seagal-sportsfisher-in-maldives_i1894

    You are going to need to find 3 other anglers to make it financially easier unless you have the cash to charter the entire boat which is a boring as it can be due to having no one to talk to!

    This Maldivian Charter, Sea Gal is run by the #1 Charter Captain in the Maldives, Ibrahim who was previously from the a famous live on board vessel for GT fishing. I have fished with him many times and exclusively go to Sea Gal.

    For Indonesia you can check with James Teo http://www.facebook.com/strike.force.104?fref=ts  and you can also tell him Luke sent you.

    If you are looking for people to come with you, go to http//forum.fishingkaki.com/categories/kakis-looking-for-kakis and tell the details of the charter and when you are going with the cost sharing details.

    We are all in Singapore, well most of us that is. What popping rods do you have now and gear?

    Okay great thanks so much for your helpful information @LukeMaowBear these look like useful contacts and good spots, I think long term I might try and plan a bigger budget trip for early next year (Andamans or Burma Banks), and in the short term I will do some exploring on local boats for GT's around Indonesia whilst on surfing trips (2 birds with one stone).

    In terms of gear I have a new 14000 Stella, and blue water series Stick baiting rod, 1 x Spool with 50lb and 1 x Spool with 100lb, and a
    saltist jigging rod. I also have around 20 poppers & stick baits with high quality terminal tackle.

    I'll be heading to Watu Karang, Pacitan, East Java first up in September / October and will try to explore and arrange for boat trip there, if anyone has any information on fishing the Pacitan region that would be very helpful, also if anyone wants to join me feel free to reach out.

    The Kaki forums look like a great community and I look forward to chatting more with everyone, and hopefully arranging some trips in the future.

    @elirae ;
    I had to Google Watu Karang man, looks like a surfing destination supreme bro! I have never even heard of the place and it seems it has a good rock fishing community http://pacitanrockfishingcommunity.blogspot.com/ (not sure how updated the site is but maybe there is a contact there and you can get some leads)

    Dated 2015 though and I don't think the GT had a happy ending :(

    For the Andamans you can speak to my mate Andrew Wong who has gone there before (unless you have already) https://www.facebook.com/andrew.wong.54379?fref=ts hope this helps.

    I have used up to 100lb mainline as well but lost a great many on the 50lb which I now keep on my Stella 10,000 for Shore Jigging big 80 Gram Jigs from shore :open_mouth:

    Yep we have a few areas to FishingKaki which you can stay in touch with.

    @elirae Hey bro I live in Bangkok too, I'm mostly a giant snakehead guy but recently got in to GT fishing. Similan is not bad for GTs they aren't huge mostly around 20kg. I know a speed boat that do day trips from Khaolak for around 20,000 baht. Also in Trang around Koh Laoliang and Koh Phetra are some good spots and cheaper option as you can hire a long tail out for 2,000 baht a day. Again GTs are around 20kg pushing 30kg if you're lucky. If you really want big GTs close by Myanmar is the place to go, check out  https://www.facebook.com/GaramuuPopping/  for big GTs, they seem to know whats up! Think they have a trip running early October but might be full already. Feel free to pop me a message man as I'm always looking for other anglers to share boat with for upcoming trips.

    Hi @chonnybluntson ;
    Okay awesome thanks so much for passing on the info, they look like great options, I'm following GaramuuPopping on Facebook yeah they look great, I'll definitely look into getting on a trip with them.

    The long tail boats sound like a great option, I'm sure the 20kg GT's would be more then enough for now, as I'm only starting out with GT fishing, although I've fished topwater for other game species back in Australia already.

    I just picked up a bait caster outfit yesterday so that I can try and do a little bit of fishing closer to Bangkok too, so if you ever wanted to catch up and chase some snakehead or Barrumundi I'm always keen. Thanks

    I want to try something in Myanmar as I have a reason to go up there often enough.

    I will check this page you shared out: https://www.facebook.com/GaramuuPopping/

    Just make sure they will catch and release. Some of these charters kill all you catch.
